The liquid refrigerant from the condenser should flow freely into the storage tank for full utilization of the condensing area. On the other hand, when there are changes in heat load at the evaporator, the amount of refrigerant liquid required also changes; then, storage tanks serve as a buffer and reservoir for refrigerant.
For small cold water machines' systems, usually no storage tanks are used but rather rely on continuous circulation through evaporators to maintain stable operation without interruptions.
